YOUNGSTOWN, OH: Carmella Williams, owner and “kitchen chemist” of Carmella Marie, a natural hair care company that produces and sells products that help women combat their number one problem, dry and brittle hair. More than that, Carmella Marie has a mission of making sure women are educating on why “who they are is more than enough.” Carmella Marie is a leading in the natural hair movement.

On Wednesday, May 16th, it was announced that Carmella Marie has won the two 2018 Editors’ Choice Awards for Best Deep Conditioner in two categories, Type 2 Wavy and Type 3C Curly-Coily. These 2018 Editors’ Choice Awards come from TextureMedia, the largest hair and beauty content and eCommerce platform. TextureMedia has a mission to encourage women to have healthy discussions as they explore everything from self acceptance to finding the best hair care product for all textures. Carmella Marie’s conditioner, Deep Conditioner with Honey Hibiscus, is one of the companies top sellers. Being selected as an awardee allows Williams to include a special seal on her packaging, marketing materials, and website from TextureMedia recognizing the product as the best of the best.

Naturally Curly Editor's choice 2018 WinnerIn addition to running Carmella Marie, Carmella Williams serves as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at the Youngstown Business Incubator, where she oversees their Women in Entrepreneurship Program and the Minority Business Assistance Center for the entire Youngstown Region. Williams is a role model for many aspiring entrepreneurs in the Mahoning Valley. Williams initially came to the YBI seeking assistance getting Carmella Marie off the ground. Williams is a recipient of the YBI’s WE Launch Grant of $5,000 back in 2015. It was with that program Williams was able to work on the crucial parts of her business that got it to where it is today, as WE Launch is a 9 week program focusing on many areas of business development including branding, marketing, packaging, pricing, and protecting your business legally.

Williams says she started her business as a way to reconnect with herself and realize that beauty, for her, is something that’s natural. “I started Carmella Mare as the result realizing that who I am is more than enough and I wanted to share that same message with other women” Williams stated. “My beauty, ideas and skills are valid and once I started to see that I began to live a more joyous life,” Williams added.

Since the inception of Carmella Marie, Williams has been a host to a number of events, publications, and media outlets to grow the awareness of the natural hair resurgence in the area. Her event, The Mane Event, is celebrating it’s 5th year this year and is dedicated to promoting a holistic approach to promoting going natural while focusing on hair, mind, and body all in one event. Williams has impacted the lives of many through her work with Carmella Marie, but also her events and her work at the Youngstown Business Incubator. One talk with Carmella and it is very clear that her work does not end here. “The products are a large part of what I do, but seeing the impact that this empowering movement, because that's what it is - a movement, is having on so many women is my sign that I’m doing something right. I did that for me, and now I’m doing it for them.”
